Set for Growth: China’s GEC Market

Since the introduction of the Green Electricity Certificate (GEC) system, the GEC market has developed rapidly in China. In the Yangtze River Delta Ecological Green Integrated Development Demonstration Zone, Jiashan County Tianning Urban Infrastructure Development and Construction Co., Ltd. introduced a GEC trading mechanism to account for renewable energy consumption. The company will purchase more than 73,000 GECs in 2024.

In 2024, a multitude of businesses in the Jiaxing Jiashan Area of the Yangtze River Delta Ecological Green Integrated Development Demonstration Zone will purchase a total of 307,000 GEC, with observers saying that this will stimulate the GEC market.

The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is also at the forefront of championing the GEC market. In the first quarter of 2025, the number of GECs traded in the Guangzhou Electric Power Trading Center exceeded 100 million, accounting for about three-quarters of the country’s total, and the total number of green electricity and GEC transactions was close to 130 million MWh, more than the sum of the previous two years. At the same time, the GEC is gaining global recognition. MNCs such as BMW, Apple, BASF, and other foreign companies are on the list of China’s top 100 green electricity consumers, playing a positive role in demonstrating and leading the purchase of GECs by more international enterprises.
