Designated by the United Nations to be held on 22rd March annually, World Water Day aims to celebrate water and raise awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. World Water Day supports the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.
The theme of World Water Day 2025 is “Glacier Preservation”. Due to global warming, glaciers are melting faster, leading to more unpredictable and extreme water cycles as part of climate change. Billions of people and fragile ecosystems are projected to be at risk from changing meltwater flows. It is therefore vital to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and prevent the melting of glaciers.
In addition, fossil fuel and nuclear energy plants require water for steam generation or cooling. According to reports by McKinsey and Company and the International Energy Agency, using renewable energy potentially reduces water usage associated with traditional energy generation, freeing up water to be used for other essential consumption needs.
