Frequently Asked Questions

Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)

A renewable energy certificate, or REC, represents proof that one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity was generated from a renewable energy resource. In the context of Singapore, these certificates, also known as renewable energy credits, are instrumental in tracking and fostering the production of green energy across the nation.

RECs serve as a mechanism to certify and track the production of renewable energy. When green energy is generated and fed into the grid, an equivalent number of RECs are created, allowing for transparent and credible tracking of renewable energy usage.

While RECs represent the generation of renewable energy, carbon offsets are measures taken to compensate for emissions elsewhere. RECs may support development of new renewable energy infrastructure, whereas carbon offsets can involve various projects like reforestation or energy efficiency initiatives such as solar energy systems.

Owners of RECs can claim use of low or zero emission electricity and thus lower their market-based Scope 2 emissions. Carbon credits can be used to offset Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.

APX is the issuer for the Tradable Instrument for Global Renewables (TIGR) while independent entities issue the I-REC(E). In Singapore, the Green Certificate Company is the I-REC(E) issuer. Find out other issuers of the I-REC(E).

REHash

Renewable energy certificates (REC) trading involves the buying and selling of RECs to support and encourage the use of renewable energy sources. RECs represent the environmental attributes of a specific amount of renewable energy produced and can be traded separately from the actual energy. This trading mechanism enables businesses and individuals to financially support and invest in renewable energy projects. By engaging in the REC trading market, participants are credited for the growth of renewable energy infrastructure and promotion of sustainable practices within the energy sector.

Engaging in REC trading can be a great financial and environmentally conscientious decision. This renewable energy investment provides individuals and businesses with an avenue to support clean energy projects without the need for direct infrastructure. While returns are primarily environmental, they also have a positive impact on corporate social responsibility and sustainability goals. Additionally, as society increasingly values and incentivises renewable energy practices, the demand for RECs may rise, potentially influencing market dynamics.

To trade RECs effectively with REHash, start by signing up for our REC trading platform. Once registered, familiarise yourself with the available options and market trends. REAPI

REAPI stands for Renewable Energy Application Programming Interface. It is a suite of APIs developed by REDEX to streamline data integration between business software applications and our core renewable energy products: REHash, REConnect, and RESuite.

Renewable Energy Generators: Easily generate and trade Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) through deeper data integration. We simplify solar rooftop device registration with fewer documents and faster approvals.

Technology Solution Providers: Sustainability platform providers offering carbon accounting can integrate REC supply onto their platform. This allows your clients to redeem RECs and support their Scope 2 decarbonisation goals.

Green Products Manufacturers: Showcase your commitment to renewable energy by using RECs to demonstrate that clean energy sources power your manufacturing process. This can be valuable for Green Hydrogen producers, Aluminium and Steel producers exporting to the EU, EV Charging Operators, and Battery Manufacturers.

To get started, email platform@redex.eco to schedule an online meeting.

REAPI is a lightweight, web-based REST (Representational State Transfer) API, compatible with most programming languages.

I-REC(E) Registry

The I-REC(E) is regulated by the International Tracking Standard Foundation in collaboration with local and national authorities. This ensures that the certificates meet stringent guidelines and adhere to international standards, providing businesses with a reliable method of certifying their renewable energy usage.

An I-REC(E) interest refers to the stake a company or individual holds in promoting and utilising renewable energy. By acquiring I-RECs(E), entities demonstrate their commitment to sustainable energy practices, contributing to global decarbonisation efforts and environmental responsibility.

Purchasing an energy attribute certificate such as the I-REC for Electricity, or I-REC(E), is pivotal for businesses aiming to authenticate their renewable energy use and reduce their carbon footprint. The I-REC(E) offer a credible and auditable means to support renewable energy initiatives, enhance corporate sustainability, and comply with international environmental standards.

APX TIGR Registry

An APX TIGR Registry account provides users with an online platform to track and transfer Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), allowing developers to generate, verify, and sell RECs.

Once a Retirement Certificate is requested in TIGR, it typically cannot be amended, meaning you can no longer move or transfer it out of the Retirement Sub-account. This process is designed to maintain the integrity and transparency of the REC retirement system. That way, retired RECs can no longer be transferable to another party.

The TIGR Registry plays a pivotal role in supporting REC issuance and tracking by providing a centralised and secure digital platform for recording and managing RECs. The platform helps streamline the issuance process, ensuring accurate and reliable tracking of RECs throughout their lifecycle.
